Follow the drumbeats to BrasilFest, which relishes in the unique diversity of this South American cultural melting pot. Brazil’s African, Portuguese and indigenous roots are celebrated with classical guitar, samba rhythms and the percussive beats of traditional folk music. Watch a demonstration of the elegant and powerful Capoeira martial arts, see glittering costumes and eat authentic food while learning about this varied culture. Presented by Brazil Center and Show Brazil Productions.

Marcos Pontes is the first Brazilian and first native Portuguese-speaking person to go into space – and the only Brazilian to complete the NASA training program. His flight fulfilled a childhood dream to become an astronaut. Pontes is one of the most experienced jet pilots in the Brazilian Air Force, where he holds the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and has flown for more than 2,000 hours in 25 different aircraft. His first NASA flight was delayed for six years because of technical and budgetary difficulties. But finally, on March 30, 2006, he traveled to the International Space Station. During his one-week trip, Pontes carried out eight experiments selected by the Brazilian Space Agency. On April 8, 2006, he landed in Kazakhstan with the crew of Expedition 12.

Seattle Center Festál, a series of 22 world festivals presented at Seattle Center on weekends throughout 2010, highlights the distinct cultures and common threads of ethnic communities in our region through traditional and contemporary art, music, foods, youth activities, workshops and more. This collection of cultural events is produced with the generous support of Wells Fargo, Verizon Wireless, KUOW 94.9 Public Radio and Western Washington Toyota Dealers. Additional support is provided by Seattle Center Foundation and the City of Seattle.
