Explore the Cultural Roots and Contemporary Influences of
African-Americans at Festival Sundiata
Seattle Center Festál: Festival Sundiata - African-American Festival, June 30 - July 1, 12 p.m. - 8 p.m., in the Armory/Center House and Fisher Pavilion, explores the cultural roots and contemporary influences of African-Americans in our region through live performances, cultural displays, hands-on activities, foods, fashion and worldy gifts.
Live music highlights:
- Ife and her soulful sounds, called a “Young Sade meet Lena Horne for the new millennium”
- Michael Power performing from his 14th CD, Passport
- Mutha Knows Best, performing a variety of old school and modern funk
- Acapulco Gold, the well known Seattle’s own R&B funk band
- Original hip hop from Baldy
- Mz. Floes and the Carmel Latte band
- African music by Soyaya
- Northwest Tap – keeping their tap shoes busy
- Reggae party sounds by Dub Lounge International and Laborer
- Not been forgotten wand workshops by the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Art highlights:
- Jimi Hendrix 70th Birthday Celebration and Exhibit featuring photographs, memorabilia, history, music, rare video footage of Jimi Hendrix
- Unspoken Truths, an outstanding American history exhibit
- Black Cultural Art Show, curated by Hiawatha D.
- World-renovated artist, Marita Dingus with her famous Black Dolls activity.

The 20 Seattle Center Festál cultural celebrations highlight the common forms of tradition and expression among ethnic communities in the Pacific Northwest, while underscoring their unique creative contributions, customs, foods and ideals. Each event offers moving entertainment and fascinating insight into a different culture of the world.
Festival Sundiata - African-American Festival is part of The Next Fifty at Seattle Center in 2012.
