PICK OF THE WEEK the break/s: a mixtape for stage @ ACT

"Hip-hop renaissance man" Marc Bamuthi Joseph is an accomplished dancer, an award-winning poet and a passionate educator. His new play – the break/s: a mixtape for the stage – features Joseph’s unique fusion of movement and theater; a powerhouse mixture of dance, sound, story, and visual imagery. With two turntables, a video jockey and Joseph’s virtuosity, the break/s is an enthralling piece of performance magic. Drawing on interviews and documentary footage, this collaboration between performer, score and projected image explodes the boundaries of theater, dance and film and explores the conflicts between public identity and private identity in our globalized, multi-everything era. Unexpected Productions
DOWNTOWN
Unexpected Productions produces comedy, theatresports, and improv shows every weekend – but no two shows are the same! See listings below and go to their website for more details.
This week: Honkey Tonk: An Improvised Play
Each performance is like its own country music ballad, complete with beer guzzling, heart ache, fighting, and friendship. Set in a Honky Tonk bar the characters create meaningful stories about hurt and longing, where pain and lust are a part of everyday life. Though the characters may be inspired to sing, this ain’t no musical: sometimes a cowboy’s just gotta croon. Think Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings, in Enumclaw, slinging back whiskeys and telling tales.
Unexpected Productions is housed in the Market Theater, which is located in downtown Seattle at the Pike Place Market. The Market Theater’s address is 1428 Post Alley Seattle WA, 98101 and is served by a whole bunch of buses. For bus routes and schedules, visit tripplanner.metrokc.gov. whispers, shrieks, and sighs especially among the upper-crust society of Madame Du Deffand’s salon. This action-packed (and mostly true) story follows the high stakes adventures of Pierre Beaumarchais, the Parisian playwright who wrote The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville. Current exhibits showing at SAM:
Target Practice: Painting Under Attack 1949-1978
Target Practice is an international, historical survey of the attacks that painting endured in the years following World War II. For the artists in the show, painting had become a trap, and they devised numerous ways to escape the conventions and break the traditions that had been passed down to them over hundreds of years. This phenomenon occurred in all parts of the world, and the exhibition documents why artists felt compelled to shoot, rip, tear, burn, erase, nail, unzip and deconstruct painting in order to usher in a new way of thinking. June 25 – September 7
Young Americans
Young Americans is one of the latest works from Mary Simpson and Fionn Mead, filmed primarily at the Home of the Good Shepherd, originally a residential institution for "orphaned and wayward girls" that was built in Seattle in 1907. Alternating between pensive shots within the empty building, and frenetic but cryptic passages in which a group re-enacts archaic games, the film maintains a provocative mystery through its fragmentation. Narrative clarity is withheld from the viewer but also from the actors as internal struggles for control of the rules and storylines mirror contemporary society’s increasingly fractured interpretation of daily events. Young Americans finds a poetic visual analog to this condition, suggesting that consequently we may all be, in a sense, orphaned and wayward. Through August 30th
