The Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) has partnered with community artists to highlight the necessary work of independent contractors and app-based workers (sometimes called gig workers) as well as the protections these workers have in the City of Seattle. Who better to display the expansiveness of gig work than gig workers themselves?
“Making Gigs Work” is an art installation that intends to create conversation about non-traditional workers, and what the City can do make sure that these workers are treated fairly and that their work is valued.

The artists convey care work through visual arts and music of the gig worker industry. How are gigs supposed work? These laws are intended to make gig work more sustainable for people trying to make a living in a more and more uneven economy – in other words to make gigs work.

The Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) will be promoting awareness of the:

  1. Independent Contractor Protections Ordinance (ICPO) which provides pay transparency and timely payment for independent contractors (self-employed persons with no employees - freelancers, sole-proprietors) for work in Seattle.
  2. App-Based Worker Minimum Payment Ordinance (APP MP) which requires certain companies to provide a minimum payment for mileage and time worked to workers using their apps.
  3. App-Based Worker Paid Sick and Safe Time Ordinance (APP PSST) which requires certain companies to provide paid time off for app-based workers to use to care for themselves or family members.
